Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

The local communities have lost everything. This project allows them to help themselves rebuild, aiding both the communities directly and the local NGOs that supply long term assistance in the area.

Project Message

The area is like a war zone. Families have nothing left, not even photos, and the natural resources are devastated. This project helps to start the rebuild and provides for long-term regeneration.

Latest Update from the Field

Family aid and coral reef research

By Daniel Ponce-Taylor - GVI Country Director, Mexico, December 17, 2007 06:25 PM

Thanks to the donations, GVI, in collaboration with Amigos de Sian Ka'an and the University of Quintana Roo, has managed to transform the devastated Estacion Costa Maya Research Station into a basic, but functional research station once again, where extremely important biological data is being gathered. This data will help understand the effects of hurricanes on reefs, and wether anthropogenic coastal developments affect the recovering capacity of Coral Reefs and related coastal ecosystems.

Parallel to this, work has been carried out in order to deliver basic goods to approximately 850 families from 9 Mayan communities. Such goods include; fresh drinking water, clothes, shoes, kitchen utensils and building materials.
