Latest Update from the Field

Post-Election Violence In Kenya

By Rufus A Murerwa - Project manager, January 28, 2008 05:50 PM

Kenya is currently experiencing post elections violence in various parts of the country after the disputed 2007 general elections. According to press reports, more than 600 people have died and over 400,000 others, majority being young people have been displaced across the country and are seeking refuge in churches, show grounds and police stations. Rift-valley province which covers Eldoret has been the most affected.

Beside the need for food, blankets and clothing, there is urgent need to address the SRH&R needs arising from the violence. So far, reports from Nairobi Women Hospital (NWH) indicate that at least 53 cases of rape have been treated in a span of just ten days since the Election Day on 27th December. Those who have reported to NWH have raised a concern that there are many more being raped in the violence hit areas but are unable to seek medical and psychological assistance due to lack of transport and security. Most of the rape cases reported are gang rape and this increases the chances of being infected with STIs, including HIV/AIDS.

This project is now responding to the needs of the Internally Displaced Persons within Eldoret and Peer Educators are working with the Red Cross society to respond to both the humanitarian situation as well are respond to SRH information and services needs of the IDPs.
