Physicians for Social Justice (PSJ)

Mission

PSJ's mission is to promote community health, as well as support underserved rural communities to realize their highest attainable standard of health. This mission is borne out of our strong conviction that physicians have a crucial role to play toward the realization of the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals(MDGs), especially in regard to those goals related to health.

Programs

PSJ current programs include: i) Rural community-based health insurance scheme- PSJ organizes each community member to contribute $1 monthly. All monies are pulled together into a sickness fund to purchase medicines to take care of sick community members. ii) Rural mobile health services- PSJ mobile teams move from one village to another to deliver healthcare services to rural people. iii) Safe motherhood project- PSJ trains local midwives on safe obstetric practices; 50 have been trained.

Chukwumuanya Igboekwu, MD - Health Program Associate
Dr. Igboekwu, male, 28, lives and works in rural Niger State in northern Nigeria, where he works as both a community physician and human rights advocate. He has been engaged in this region for over four years now. His current work focuses on how to assist rural communities in designing innovative cost-effective healthcare delivery models that promotes access to affordable healthcare.

Idris Ibrahim,MD, MPH - President
Dr. Idris, 30 is a physician and public health practitioner. He is a native of Gwari indegenous tribe in Niger State. He has been engaged in the community service for the past 6 years. He successfully managed PSJ's various rural health programs. his current work focuses on advocting for the interest of socially marginalized comunities in public health policies at the local government level.
