Sex education for youth of Guanajuato

Summary

In an area where abortion is banned except for emergency situations, it is imperative that young men and women make responsible and informed sexual decisions.

More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Recent efforts by conservative members of the State government have tried to limit women's reproductive and sexual rights in Guanajuato. With legal abortion limited only to emergency situations, young people in both rural and urban areas need the education to make informed decisions about their sexual behavior. Without knowledge of safe sex precautions, these youth are at risk of unwanted pregnancy, venereal disease, and damage inflicted by un-safe abortions.

Activities

80 young leaders who are active in their schools will be trained to lead safe-sex workshops. Topics cover safe-sex measures, including abstinence & responsible decision-making. Leaders at high school and university levels will teach to mixed groups.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Over 1,000 youth will be reached in the first year. As leaders will need to be replaced upon graduating from their schools, a model that efficiently recruits and trains new leaders will be created.

Project Message

Young people need the power of information to make the right decisions for themselves.
