More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

In Bolivia increasing migration of older indigenous people into urban areas leads to greater isolation and cultural disorientation. This project is set up by a group of older women who themselves provide organizational support and skills to similarly isolated people in the outlying areas of La Paz - in Pampahasi, Bajo, Pampahasi Alto, and Kupini as well as in some rural areas directly benefiting 750 older women and men.

Activities

Awicha provides opportunities to older people to empower themselves. It increases income through production of jam and alpaca items for sale in local markets, improves health through production of traditional herbal remedies and establishment of 2 small medical centres.

Project Message

We Awichas, with our minds and work, have built this organization. We know how to run our group kitchens, our textile workshops. We don’t depend on the government. Everything depends on our own effort.
