More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

IDEX is working with our local grantees in Bangladesh to provide emergency relief. Cyclone Sidr destroyed homes and devastated crops. Some 500,000 homes have been destroyed, and 845,000 households have been affected, according to the British Red Cross. Survivors are now struggling for basic necessities like shelter, rice, medicine and clean water. Families in this region survive on their crops and with these gone they are fast running out of food, and have no access to clean, potable water.

Activities

IDEX will use the funds to buy rice, pulses (beans and peas) and water purification tablets to provide emergency food, salt, saline and clean water to 6000 families (30,000 people). Each person will receive two meals per day for five days.

Latest Update from the Field

March 2008 Update

By Katherine Zavala - Program Coordinator, March 06, 2008 05:46 PM

Cyclone floodwaters submerged more than fifty percent of the country under water in 2007. The high amount of rain in Bangladesh caused sudden over flow of water across all rivers, and specifically, paddy lands. Transport among cities also stopped in many part of the country.

In addition, water submerged all residential areas, slums and roads around Chittagong and entered in to many part of the city including OWDEB’s office, training room etc.

OWDEB evaluated the immediate needs of their group members and provided them with food staples such as, dry food, potatoes, rice, pulses, salt, and cooking oil.
