More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Lushoto, Tanzania, is a rural, agricultural area with high rates of unemployment and communicable diseases. The town market is the primary source of contagious diseases. We plan to create 10-20 new waste management jobs by building a small compost and biogas facility on-site. Properly managed waste will reduce disease occurrence for an estimated 600 families and local families will be able to access clean energy for lighting and cooking needs, and organic fertilizer for farm use.
Activities
With local government support we will build both a compost and biogas facility in the Lushoto town market and provide technical training and business and market development services for both products.

Resources
Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
The project will serve the entire Lushoto population in terms of disease control and energy services. The Lushoto Government may adapt the biogas as a long-term solution to provide sustainable energy to its citizens and create more job opportunities.
Project Message
Waste is no longer a disease-causing nuisance but a resource that can be used for profit. We have the obligation to use this resource to lift our community out of poverty.
- John Orio, Lushoto Health and Sanitation Officer
