Mission

Phakamisa seeks to uplift impoverished and AIDS devastated communities in Durban, South Africa through the provision of early childhood and adult education, training and support .

Programs

This year we will provide support to over 15 000 children of 0-18 years, through: • Educare teacher training programme • Caregiver Support Groups • Gardening and nutrition programme • HIV AIDS Support Group Our Economic Empowerment initiatives include: • Beadwork • Woven, embroidered grass mats (Cansis) • Manufacture of Fantasy clothes • Sale of fresh and processed vegetables

Personnel Overview

Glenda Howieson - Director and Lay Minister of Missions
Glenda is a white South African woman who was trained as a teacher and initially worked at one of the few multiracial apartheid schools. After independence, she saw a desperate need in the rural areas for early childhood education and support. With the help of Pinetown Methodist Church, she developed "Phakamisa" to lift up communities and give local residents the skills to care for their children
