More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Seva Mandir (SM) works with aboriginal people in Southern Rajasthan. Dals (lentils) are grown extensively in this area and sold in raw form, but socially marginalized farmers are systematically exploited by wealthy intermediaries such as upper caste traders and large corporations. As a result, farmers ultimately receive less than 1/3 of the retail price for processed dals. Almost all beneficiaries of this project live in extreme poverty (<$1 / day).

Activities

By processing dals locally, impoverished farmers will receive more equitable returns for their hard work. This is a viable business proposition and thus self-sustaining once the mill is set up.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Your donation will immediately enable a highly impoverished community to get fair returns for their hard work. In a larger sense, you are helping to empower a disadvantaged community of aboriginal people to dream bigger than they ever have before.

Project Message

Progress in rural India will be limited until new industry comes forth for the benefit of farming communities.
