More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Due to seasonal variations in rainfall and the varieties of crops being grown, communities face food shortages for three to four months each year. Many members of the community make only $6 a month, putting their livelihoods in jeopardy when periods of lower rainfall correspond with fluctuations in production. When there is a surplus of food, village members carry heavy sacks of corn up to eight hours away to be sold at the nearest mill to earn supplemental income.

Activities

The project will power locally managed mills, providing income from processing crops, increasing food security. The project will provide lighting for houses in the community, eliminating the need to spend income on kerosene, candles, and batteries.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

This project will provide food security to 1,000 indigenous households in Mindanao and Luzon in the Philippines. Village-based enterprises will be developed and the funds raised will help sustain the operations and maintenance costs of the community

Project Message

"We want to use electricity to power a corn mill near to us...so that we don't have to spend hours for a bag of corn to the nearest milling center miles away"
- -- Indigenous peoples, from Dlumay and Datalnay

Latest Update from the Field

Progress for Datalnay/Dlumay Micro-Hydro

By Michel Maupoux - Program Manager, Green Empowerment, August 13, 2008 05:47 PM

As of July 2008, the following activities have started and will be on-going:
* Social preparation (organizing for construction, management, maintenance);
* Sustainable agriculture training and implementation to improve food supply to the population;
* Deeds of parcels to the community organization for all land necessary for civil works, including the power house that will house the turbine and generator;
* Local (endemic) seedling collection, tree nursery development, and tree-planting to protect the watershed.

As of August 10, 2008, the custom-made turbine and generator assembly have been built by our generous in-kind donor Canyon Hydro. Shipment to the Philippines will happen once the importation red tape is cleared.

The necessary civil work (weir, canal, piping, penstock, etc.) is scheduled to be completed with help of the villagers by December 2008.
Site installation of turbine & generator is scheduled for the first half of 2009, with the test run in June 2009.

Complementary funding is still sought for the corn mill equipment.
