More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Nigeria contributes 25 percent to world cassava production with US$5 billion annual revenue however creates unprecedented health and environmental hazards. The project is abating pollution, mitigating greenhouse gas emission and improving ecosystem health through installation of bioreactor treating cassava waste and producing biogas driving microturbines for low-cost, safe and reliable off-grid energy for 2,250 poor families with environmentally safe organic organic fertilisers for poor farmers.

Activities

Activities include design of energy systems and bioreactor with sand drying bed for organic fertilisers, installation of bioreactor, gas cleaning systems, microturbines and off-grid energy efficient lighting systems with compact fluorescent lamps.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

The project will provide low cost, safe and reliable off-grid energy for 2,250 poor families for 15 years. Reduce infant mortality and indoor air pollution for13,500 children and provide organic fertilizer for 12,000 low-income farmers for 15 years.

Project Message

This project turns an environmental and human health hazard into a valuable energy resource and could be implemented in most developing economies where need for affordable and safe energy runs high.
