More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

In South African prisons gangsterism, drugs, sexual abuse and violence are the norm. Many young lives are destroyed forever by the prison gangs, with the abused often becoming the abuser. Hope Academy is a program that aims to decrease negative behaviour and break this cycle of abuse and violence. The program teaches inmates to not re-commit crime and become law abiding citizens once released. Ex-members have the opportunity to find employment and even become coaches back in their communities.

Activities

Hope Academy aims to develop inmates holistically. Each prisoner is placed into a 3 tier development plan impacting and nurturing their 1. Football, 2. Faith and 3. Future. The program runs activities within each tier (see proposal for more info).

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

44 juveile offenders are impacted yearly through the program. These young men are trained to become future faciltators of the project teaching other prisoners. By 2012 we can have 5 academies serving 100 boys and extend the program into Africa.

Project Message

I can see the difference in the boys, they have hope, self belief and self worth from being in this program. They now have an opportunity to become someone and a success in the future.
- Lee Sharpe, Patron of Hope Academy, ex-professional player
