More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The Umoja village was founded by Indigenous Samburu women who were rejected by their communities after being raped. MADRE supporters have given generously to education initiatives and purchased goats, chickens, and other livestock for income-generating purposes. Now, these animals and the lives of the women and children are threatened by nocturnal predators.

Activities

MADRE will construct a five-foot-tall fence made of thatching, stone, and chain link surrounding the village.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

By serving its purpose in keeping out predators, the fence will: 1) Decrease incidences of injury and death to village children; and 2) Bolster the village’s economic livelihood.

Project Message

I live in fear that a hyena will come and take away one of my babies. They have already taken two goats this year, and they are our key to survival.
- Nagusi, Umoja Villager
