Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Approximately 25,000 individuals, including 10,000 workers and their families, live on a large sugar plantation in Kakira, Uganda. Based on a prevalence of HIV in 10% of the adult population in Uganda, the estimated number of HIV infections is about 1,000 – 300 to 500 may be eligible for antiretroviral treatment and prophylaxis for opportunistic infections. In addition, a small number of women may be eligible for prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission during birth and breast-feeding.

Activities

IAVI will work closely with the Joint Clinical Research Center (JCRC) in Kampala, Uganda to prepare an AIDS/HIV vaccine trials program enrolling participants at high risk for HIV infection.
