Mission

GPSVS was founded in 1978 by social activists inspired by Gandhi, who believed in his philosophy of "swarajya" or local self-reliant organization based on justice and equity. The mission of GPSVS is to "conscientize and enable people to practice simple way of life in harmony with nature and and high moral values, tolerance to all faiths, compassion and non-exploitation of fellow human beings, to achieve dignity and self-reliance." GPSVS is a leader in organizing a women's movement.

Programs

GPSVS has a number of other programs relating to men's organization, food production, distributing land to poor families, small-scale irrigation, women's literacy, and disaster relief after periodic floods. All of these programs are within the same remote district of Madhubani in Bihar.
