To provide education to orphaned & vulnerable children, providing them with the basic skills to become self-sufficient and escape child labor, prostitution, and death by poverty and AIDS.

Orphaned girls are especially vulnerable. Girls are often forced into relationships with older men, sometimes as second or third wives. Others become sex workers, having no other source of income with which to care for younger siblings. Practices such as female genital mutilation, polygamy, and early marriage are prevalent in Uganda. UMOP takes in three girls to every two boys believing that to educate and empower a girl will empower the nation.
Activities
The goal of the project is to build a girls dormitory. Currently, the girls are vulnerable due to the location of the school near an industrial site.

Project Message
"Everyday there is a funeral ... and children left behind with no one to care for them. As a priest, they call me Father. How can I sleep at night if I don't try my best to look after these children."

Latest Update from the Field
Girls housing!
By Jaya Canterbury-Counts - Project Sponsor, August 28, 2007 05:13 PM
One hundred and eighteen girls are now living in the new dormitory! They have a bath and toilet block nearby that includes running water and flushing toilets! The cement factory is still across the road but the girls are more secure and safe now. Everyone is so grateful for the generosity of all the donors who have made this possible. Thank you.
