More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Comprised of five different ecosystems, ten percent of the planet's total land species, and over 700 different reptile species, Mexico is a bastion of biodiversity. As part of a concerted effort by the Rainforest Alliance and others, sustainable management of Mexico's forests has increased in acreage from 288,996 acres in 1998 to 1,269,163 in 2002. The demand from local people wanting technical assistance and access to US markets now outweighs our ability to help!
Activities
To provide training to local people in sustainable timber harvesting. We engage landowners and connect them with wood buyers in the US. This protects the habitat of scores of species while ensuring people have a lasting source of income.

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
The goal is to ensure the long term health of the forest and the livelihoods of those depending on them.
Project Message
Deforestation rates are the same in Mexico as Brazil, and the population is growing faster. Without guidelines for using Mexico's forests scores of species will go extinct and jobs will be lost.
