Reducing pollution from stone crushing in India
More Information About this ProjectProject Needs and BeneficiariesAirborne silica generated from stone crusher mills (used to produce gravel used in construction) throughout Orissa, India is suspected to be the cause of increased morbidity and mortality rates from silicosis, cancer, and other lung disease. Unprotected workers, including children, working without respirators, in plants lacking proper ventilation or dust removal systems, are exposed to clouds of silica dust. Emissions from these operations are also known to affect local communities. ActivitiesThe goals of this project are:1) reduce risk of cancer and respiratory disease by reducing the exposures; 2) provide educational programs regarding health hazards and emission controls; 3) demonstrate the effectiveness of pollution control equipment; Funding InformationTotal Funding Received to Date: $451 Funding InformationThis project is now in implementation and no longer available for funding. Received funds will be used to accomplish concrete objectives as indicated in the project's "Activities" section. Updates will be posted under the "Progress Report" tab as they become available. Donors' contributions and pledges to this project totaled $451. The original project funding goal was $10,000. Additional DocumentationThis project has provided additional documentation in a Microsoft Word file (projdoc.doc). Why this Project is ImportantPotential Long Term ImpactBy demonstrating pollution control equipment and educating workers, we hope to reduce exposures to airborne silica in the stone crushing industries in this region..
