Project Needs and Beneficiaries

1300 low income, migrant children affected by Colombia’s armed conflict that must be included into the educational system to recover their right to education. We aim to expand to other areas with high reception rates of displaced population and attend children in an affective, personalized way, preparing them with cooperative, participatory strategies of Escuela Nueva for their formal entry to school; engage community as part of the solution to reduce the risk of being forced into illegal groups

Activities

Organization of Learning Circles to provide complementary support in basic learning/social skills; production & provision of EN learning guides with cross-curricular content; training of youth community leaders as tutors with strategies to adapt EN

Potential Long Term Impact

The project educates 1300 vulnerable children (ages 7-15) increasing socialization among them & improving academic performance. Community adoption and support of the project diminishes the number of children being drawn to join illegal armed groups

“In only 6 months of operation, the Escuela Nueva Learning Circles Program for migrant, internally displaced children, has numerous achievements: a 100% enrollment, an 18.5% increase in children’s self esteem, and the highest level of improvement in both language and math, placing children of the learning circles 13.9 and 17.3 points, respectively, above the national average.”*
