HIV-Aids treatment-support garden group in Nyanga

These people all have HIV-Aids. They all get treatment and medication from a clinic in Nyanga. The nursing sister and the group, with our help, set up a treatment support garden. The members report that they are helped by the garden in many ways- eating fresh vegetables gives them more energy, food in the belly mitigates the side effects of the drugs they take and, perhaps best of all, the garden gives them a sense of well being and hope.

Siyazama Community Garden Association (SCAGA)

SCAGA, in Khayelitsha, is one of hundreds of community gardens that Abalimi has launched. It is one of the biggest community gardens, at 5000 m2. It is here that we have proved that formal jobs can be created on 500m2 or less. SCAGA is also an ecological oasis, where a wide range of birds and indigenous fauna thrive in the Cape floral windbreaks. SCAGA proved to the City that community can utilise open spaces responsibly. SCAGA (est 1995), is the "Lighthouse Project" which launched a movement!

Trainees get certificates in Basic Agriculture

This is a typical group of agriculture trainees, proudly displaying their certificates, after completing a four day basic agriculture course. They are standing in front of a freshly planted bed of vegetables, which they planted themselves. Abalimi guarantees that trainees will always be able to plant a sustainable organic subsistence garden, under any conditions, for the rest of their lives, after completion of the course and two seasons of practice!!
