More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

After years of war and oppressive Taliban restrictions against schooling for women and girls, the literacy rate of Afghan women is among the lowest in the world. Afghan women are eager to return to school after years of having no opportunity to learn and they want to learn as quickly as possible. Project partner the Afghan Institute of Learning provides literacy classes to about 900 women and girls per month. More women have requested literacy classes.

Activities

One 4 month literacy class provides about 30 girls and women in Kabul the opportunity to learn to read and write. Students also learn basic arithmetic and how to read signs, create shopping lists, save money, and help their children with schoolwork

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

When they finish the course, the women can read and write. They have better self-esteem and a strong sense of pride in their new abilities. Some women continue to study for grade certificates on a fast track basis after gaining basic literacy.

Project Message

When I joined AIL’s literacy course, I couldn’t even take the pencil properly in my hands. Now I can read the first volume textbook and write. I am very happy and wish a long life for AIL.
