More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

In Argentina, teachers of the deaf do not use sign language. Thus, deaf students have no access to a complete school curriculum. The deficient education places the deaf community in a critical situation. Deaf students abandon school or finish their schooling at a very low academic level. Their simplified curricular program makes integration into high school very hard, especially in the fields of language and social sciences. Beneficiaries: deaf students, deaf adults and teachers.

Activities

Designing of videos, translation into sign language, training of interpreters, video recording and editing, copying and distribution.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Deaf students will raise their academic level, which will enable them to continue their superior education. These videos will show that deaf people are perfectly able to learn, and that the difficulties they face are related to lack of access.

Project Message

"I strongly believe that access to information makes people free. Information in sign language is part of recognizing deaf people's linguistic rights and their active participation in society."
- Silvana Veinberg, Executive Director

Latest Update from the Field

Thank you!!

Educative material for deaf children needs to be developed in sign language. “El sueño de Tomás” (Thomas’ dream) is the first videostory in Argentine sign language (LSA) for children 4 to 7 years of age. It includes eight interactive games with explanations in sign language related to different parts of the story.

Although the video is all signed, thanks to the funds received from GlobalGiving, we added a booklet that accompanies the CD which includes:

--A brief description of the objectives of this video
--The translation of the story into Spanish
--Activities for the adults to play with the children

The main objective of this booklet is to enable hearing people (parents, teachers, brothers and sisters) to participate in this experience and support the deaf child.
