Mission

Canales is a non-profit organization conformed by deaf and hearing people concerned by the marginal situation of deaf people in Argentina. We promote the right of deaf children for an accessible education, through educative projects. All our projects are based on the recognition of sign language as the natural language of the deaf, and on the active participation of deaf people in the design and development of educative programs.

Programs

Department of teacher training: courses in different provinces of Argentina on bilingual education for the deaf, interpreter training, courses for deaf adults in education. Department of investigation: development of written material for teachers and for pediatricians. New methods to teach Spanish as a second language for deaf children.Department of child education: games and stories at school with parents, storytelling in sign language, workshops in sexual education for deaf adolescents

Personnel Overview

Silvana Veinberg - Speech Therapist– MS in ASL Linguistics
Silvana is a Speech Therapist that has been working with deaf children and adults since 1981. She is struggling to improve the lives of deaf people in Argentina by creating accessible ways of communication, interaction and integration in education. To date, Silvana has worked directly with more than 4,000 deaf and hearing persons in various projects to change deaf education in her country.

Alicia Sinigaglia - Teacher of the deaf / Sign language interpreter
Alicia worked for 12 years as a teacher of deaf children. She became an interpreter in argentine sign language and is working as such in a secondary school for deaf students, and in the Superior school for Deaf teachers. She is in charge of the design and development of training courses of CANALES Asociación Civil.

Marisa Macchi - Linguist
Marisa Macchi specializes in teaching Spanish as a second Language. She came close to the deaf area through her study of the process of linguistic learning of deaf students. She participated in the design of material for teaching Spanish to small children and to deaf adults.
