More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Afghans have the world’s lowest life expectancies at birth and some of the world’s highest infant, child, and maternal morality rates. The poor rural area south of Herat city in Afghanistan has not had medical services during the last quarter century of war and civil strife. Most of the infrastructure in Afghanistan, including hospitals and health clinics, has been destroyed. A health clinic is urgently needed in this area.

Activities

Funding to build a maternal/child health facility in a rural area south of Herat city has been secured. The people have asked AIL to build a clinic there and have donated land. Funding is needed to build a wall and a well for the clinic.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Project partner AIL already has 2 clinics serving rural communities in Afghanistan. Each clinic sees about 2,500 patients per month from 45 surrounding villages. This rural clinic in Herat province will bring services to new patients and villages.

Project Message

Many people in this rural community are internal refugees who fled war and destruction in there home villages. This project will contribute to meeting the health needs of this underserved community.
