More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Roughly 500,000 displaced survivors are being housed in temporary camps or shelters. Clean, safe drinking water is in short supply, and is being provided via unsustainable measures.
Water purification and disinfection systems are needed to address both immediate and long term needs of the survivors. Cholera and diarrheal disease was already endimic in the region prior to the tsunami (70,000 accute cases in 2004 alone).
Activities
WaterHealth International (WHI) installs water purification systems for emergency relief in temporary shelters. Germicidal UV light disinfects surface water, rivers, well water or contaminated municipal water; produces water meeting WHO guidelines.
