More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Children orphaned due to AIDS are cut off from critical access to healthcare, education, and basic necessities. While African extended families traditionally support orphans, the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic has overburdened this traditional safety net. Foster families and guardians, who have limited resources due to Africas chronic poverty and underdevelopment, are often not equipped to assist the growing number of orphans. Nyaka School provides free education and care to AIDS orphans.
Activities
Education, social activities, and basic healthcare are provided for students. Programs to strengthen the lives of students and the local community, including guardians; student-driven anti-AIDS education, adult education and nutrition programs.

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
Builds a self-sustaining, community-based free primary school for AIDS orphans. Nyaka is an ongoing project that will continue growing each year. At the end of 2008, the school will have seven classes.
Project Message
I grew up in rural Uganda where my parents sold goats, cows and part of our land to educate me. Without parents to make such sacrifices, students at Nyaka still have a chance for a bright future.
- Twesigye Jackson Kaguri, Co-founder and director

MSU Extension Spotlight
A Social Entrepreneur Among Us
If you need some inspiration, Id encourage you to read about Jackson Kaguri in yesterdays Lansing State Journal (see link below)
Jackson is a development officer in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and one of the most optimistic and positive people I know. We keep him busy raising funds for programs in the college, including MSU Extension, but in his free time he has demonstrated his entrepreneurial acumen by developing a school for children who were orphaned by AIDS in his home country of Uganda. The school is not only helping young people prepare for adulthood, but also serving community needs with a water system and a central point for community organization and communication.
When we talk about developing entrepreneurs as one of our five strategic priorities, we need to keep our minds open to the varieties of entrepreneurship. That includes social entrepreneurs like Jackson who are willing to take risks and pursue visions that generate benefits for others. Thanks to Jackson for being such a powerful model for us.
