More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Children orphaned by AIDS are often cut off from basic needs such as: healthcare, education, food, clothing, and shelter. While Ugandan extended families traditionally support orphans, the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic has overburdened that traditional "safety net." Foster families and guardians, who already have limited resources as it is, are often not equipped to assist the growing number of orphans (2.2 million in Uganda alone). Nyaka provides free education and care to AIDS orphans.

Activities

Nyaka is more than a school. It is a community development project with programs meeting needs such as: education, health and nutrition, clean water, support for grandmothers and guardians, community HIV/AIDS prevention, vocational training, & more.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

In 2008, Nyaka became a full-fledged primary school and is having it's first graduation in December of 2008. The numbers don't lie. HIV infection rates are twice as high for youth who do not finish primary school. Education is a key solution to AIDS

Project Message

"I grew up in rural Uganda where my parents sold goats, cows, & land to educate me. Despite not having parents to make such sacrifices, the students at Nyaka still have a chance for a bright future."
- Twesigye Jackson Kaguri, Director and Founder of the Nyaka School(
