More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Afghan boys today only know fighting because of the last quarter century of war in Afghanistan. Many young boys were soldiers or lived as refugees. Refugee boys worked long hours selling newspapers or candy in the streets in order to feed themselves and their families and could never go to school. Now they have returned to Afghanistan and are too old to join school. They are hopeless. Without direction for the future, they continue to fight and disrupt their families and communities.

Activities

120 boys will study in Educational Learning Centers supported by CHI/AIL in Kabul and Herat. These community-based centers will give boys the opportunity to study math, science, language, and earn grade certificates on a fast-track basis.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Boys will become literate, advance their education, and learn such skills as computers and English that will help them get jobs. Education for boys will improve Afghanistan’s economy and contribute to making the country more secure.

Project Message

My father died in the war. I am the oldest son so I had to work to feed my family. My friends laughed at me because I couldn’t write my name. Since I joined AIL’s school, I can read & write very well.
- Mohammad Akbar, 16-year-old student of CHI/AIL boys' class

A Special Giving Opportunity.....

By Sondra Johnson - Growing Afghan Boys Thank You, November 10, 2009 03:48 PM

Thank you for your support. Your desire to make a difference in this world has made a difference, and we are very thankful that Afghan people have had their lives changed with your help.

We wanted to share with you a very special opportunity to give more than 100% from November 10 through December 1st. Please share this with those you know who care. During this time, we are privileged to receive additional matching funds from your donation through Global Giving of at least 30%. The need is still great. Afghanistan struggles to become a country of strength and stability.

In the month of September, AIL taught 2,881 males. The opportunity for an education is a crucial alternative for Afghan boys. Without the opportunity to better themselves, these boys have a much higher chance to drift into the murky world of militant fighting and extremist propaganda. Providing basic literacy, advanced education in math, science, English and computer training gives Afghan boys and men the basics needed to develop strong jobs and be an asset to the Afghan society.
