More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

In Zimbabwe, the boy child is given priority in all aspects of life. This has resulted in the escalating number of homeless girls, school drop-outs, child prostitution, rape, HIV/AIDS, forced virginity testing, early marriages and pregnancies. By setting up an Empowerment Village in rural Hwange, the project will reach over 1,000 girls. The first of its kind in the area, the village will expose the rampant abuse against girl children and break the culture of silence and shame in Hwange.

Activities

Two hundred girls will be assisted in setting up and running income-generating self-help projects. Three hundred girls will be reinstated to schools and 100 girls will be assisted with applications to apply for University.

Project Message

The GCN Empowerment Villages work miracles for the girl children of Zimbabwe. Life is particularly difficult for women and children, and for many, the village is their only hope for a better future.

Latest Update from the Field

GCN Wins UNDP Red Ribbon Award!

By IDEX - Project sponsor, September 15, 2006 06:17 PM

IDEX congratulates our partner, Girl Child Network (GCN), on the announcement that the organization is a winner of the Red Ribbon Award: Celebrating Community Leadership and Action on AIDS. Based in Zimbabwe, GCN is the first winner of the Red Ribbon award for Addressing Gender Inequities that Fuel the HIV/AIDS Epidemic. The award was given to them at the XVI International AIDS Conference in Toronto last month.

Sarah Dotlich, IDEX's Africa Program Director announced, "We have been watching their truly exceptional work grow since GCN's inception in 1998. It's fitting to see GCN receive international recognition that can only help them to further their objectives while providing a model of similar initiatives in the region."

To learn more about the compelling work of GCN come and hear one of the founding members speak. Memory Bandera will be in the Bay Area at the end of September and IDEX is hosting an event for her at the Women's Building, see below.
