More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
State and local budget cuts have virtually eliminated arts instruction in LA’s inner city schools where low perforance and high dropouts rates prevail. High quality after school arts instruction re-engages alienated kids and inspires them toward success in school and beyond. “Independent evaluation results demonstrate that our arts program is transforming the lives of children”, said Carla Sanger, LA’s BEST President and CEO.
Activities
For one hour twice weekly for 10 weeks, professional artist/teachers teach intensive, hands-on “residencies” in visual arts, dance, music or theatre to 2 groups of 20 kids in Grades K-2 and Grades 3-5, following a carefully articulated curriculum.

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
By using the arts to re-connect alienated, poor kids to their own potential for success and to the importance of school participation and completion, this project empowers them to see and succeed in school and beyond, against enormous odds.
Project Message
“[The After School Arts Program at LA’s BEST is the most valuable program offered.] It opens doors to worlds previously unknown and empowers kids to believe in their own ability to excel.”
- Dean Schramm, Dean Schramm is an LA’s BEST Board Member
