More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Camp Amnicon works with youth from difficult neighborhoods and broken homes, struggling with drugs & alcohol, suicide, and abusive relationships. Many never experience support or a loving environment. Amnicon gives them an experience where people are kind, loving and supportive. Amnicon uses wilderness trips to challenge youth to overcome both emotional and physical obstacles and teaches them that they are capable, loveable, and worthwhile. Trips are funded by donations and churches.

Activities

At-risk youth receive scholarships to Amnicon. The money comes from generous donors and churches. The money directly sponsors a youth's wilderness trip experience either by buying the food, supplies or paying for the professional guide on each trip.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Amnicon is about helping kids feel safe. Amnicon's goal is to give kids the confidence to face the challenges in their world and to break the cycles of drugs, violence and abuse that they are used to.

Project Message

A great trip! Everyone is close. We trust each other now. We’re in the woods and we care for each other. Boil water, make fire and help cook. I didn’t think we could, but we did! We can do anything!

Camp Amnicon Thanks

By Camp Amnicon - Ministry on Lake Superior, September 25, 2009 04:22 PM

Thank you very much for your support to Camp Amnicon through Global Giving. Thanks to your support, Amnicon met the qualifications of the American Open Challenge and will be permanently listed on Global Giving’s nationally-searched website. As a result, your gift to Amnicon is of immeasurable value, as it will continue to provide positive experiences for youth that transform their lives forever.

Woods, water and campfire have once again played their life-renewing role in our 2009 summer season of wilderness trips. These elements, along with small-group community-building and faith sharing, combine to create the kind of intensely powerful life experience that so many campers strive to put into words:

“I will never be able to express all that this trip has meant to me. This has truly been the best camp experience I’ve ever been a part of. No, even more, this is the best experience I’ve ever had. It is the most incredible week of my life. I am going to keep the community we built going on back at home.” – a first time camper, 2009

Almost half of Amnicon campers this summer came from foster homes, reservations, inner city and low-income communities, or mental health related programs. Because of your care and financial support, Amnicon can provide the power of wilderness and Christian compassion to youth of all different backgrounds. In addition, your gift makes it possible for Amnicon to expand its collaboration with new inner-city programs as well as long-established ones. In the past two years alone Amnicon has experienced a doubling in the request for campership funds. Your donation greatly helps us meet these requests. Global Giving connects donors like you to community-based projects that need support like Amnicon. In turn, Amnicon fosters profound differences in the lives of our individual campers as well as the larger communities where they will return.

Thank you again for your generous gift!
