More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
WFP provides food and hope for more than 41,000 students in Bhutan. Impeding the ability of many children to attend school is the country’s mountainous terrain, harsh climate and isolated settlements. Proper food storage and preparation is a serious concern in rural schools, where limited space, damp conditions and poor ventilation is common. Inadequate storage and cooking facilities, improper preparation and lack of clean water can often result in a loss of valuable food.
Activities
WFP seeks to improve sanitation, kitchens and storage facilities in rural schools by installing permanent latrines, showers, fuel efficient stoves, and kitchen and storage facilities.

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
With proper facilities, WFP can ensure valuable food is not wasted due to improper storage or preparation, allowing the agency to provide food to more students, enable increased boarding and encourage rural enrollment.
Project Message
By focusing our efforts on providing food in schools, we increase the likelihood that children will receive an education, a critical ingredient to bettering their lives.

Latest Update from the Field
Update from Bhutan
By Meredith Slater - Development Assistant, Friends of the WFP, August 15, 2007 05:11 PM
Nonetheless, thanks to donors like you, the latest World Food Program assessment has reported that Bhutan is on track to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of Universal Primary Education by 2015. Since 2005 alone, primary education enrollment rates in Bhutan have increased, and are now at 80% for boys and girls.
Moving forward, the new focus of WFP assistance in Bhutan from 2008-2012 will be on primary education and capacity-building of government counterparts. The Royal Government of Bhutan will be taking on an increased role in the school feeding program as part of a transition phase to full government support.
Please click below to see a photo from Bhutan! Where school feeding programs are offered, enrollment and attendance rates increase significantly, particularly for girls.
