More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
The low quality and insufficient public education in Brazil’s under funded school system means that most children leave primary school functionally illiterate. This community seeks to solve this problem. A community built and run school in one of the poorest areas of the country will guarantee that their children receive fundamental early childhood literacy skills. To be poor in Brazil means to be disenfranchised from the wider society and the opportunities that come with it.
Activities
Primary school classes will be held daily with alphabetization taking place alongside of art classes, history through reading, play time and physical as well as health education and meals. The 20 children are from a project that serves 280 youth.

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
Functional literacy means a better chance at a brighter future with more opportunities- 20 children who can read - it may be a first for their family. They are lucky if they get to complete the primary school years due to family poverty.
Project Message
Ensuring literacy and early childhood development provides skills and opportunity sorely lacking in a society that has the highest disparity of wealth in the world according to the UN.
