More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Children who suffer trauma and loss are vulnerable not just in the first dark hours and days after a tragedy, but also in later months - even years when, they fear, the world has forgotten them. Half the Sky's BigTop Children's Activity Centers located in refugee settlements in Dujiangyuan near the earthquake's epicenter will provide long-term support for the children of Sichuan. Locally hired caregivers who receive ongoing training will remain long after disaster volunteers have dispersed.

Activities

Trained caregivers offer fun activities, including artwork and music, as well as counseling at cheery BigTop Children's Activity Centers designed to be oases for the youngest victims of the earthquake.

Latest Update from the Field

Children’s Earthquake Fund Is Closed

By Jenny Bowen - Executive Director, Half the Sky Foundation, January 28, 2009 09:17 AM

Dear Global Giving Friends,

I want to offer my sincere thanks to all of you who have contributed to our Children’s Earthquake Fund. The response to help children orphaned and displaced by the quake in Sichuan has just been amazing.

Thanks to your generosity, I am very pleased to tell you that the Fund is now closed. Our generous donors have provided sufficient funding to support six Big Tops for children’s disaster relief and healing for the next 3 years!

We have followed through on our commitment not to forget the children of Sichuan and you have helped make it happen.

With love and gratitude,

Jenny
