More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Only 30% of people have access to potable water facilities in Kyuso district; and this figure is even lower regarding sanitation coverage. The area is affected by an ongoing drought, and has received food donations for the last five years. Water and sanitation-related diseases are one of the major problems affecting people in these areas. The program will benefit approximately 6,000 people.

Activities

•Construct boreholes, sand dams, cattle troughs, and latrines to serve people in this area •Conduct training and education programs for teachers, health clubs, caretakers, and other community leaders •Organize village water and sanitation committee

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Increased access to clean water supply and sanitation services in Kyuso will decrease the prevalence of water-borne disease and allow more time for children to attend school and for women to participate in income generating activities.

Project Message

Communities will be able to meet their own water needs and lead more dignified lives through access to sanitation by using low-cost, sustainable solutions that they can own and maintain for themselves
- Rich Thorsten, Director of International Programs

Latest Update from the Field

Quarterly Update - July 2009

By Jessica Brooks - Donor Care Specialist, July 01, 2009 11:50 AM

Over the last few months, activities surrounding this project have been mostly administrative in nature and while many of the details have been cemented the funding aspects are being finalized so the project may begin. One of the concerns about the project area is the semi-arid climate. WaterPartners wants to ensure that each community has a back-up plan are in place in case that water is not found during the drilling process. If the borehole is found to be dry, local technologies such as sand dams will be brought to scale to serve all of the community and be certain that none of the communities involved in the project are left without a water source. Additionally, this project will include conflict training as water for domestic consumption and livestock is a highly sought after resource that often leads to conflicts between communities.
