Mission

Critical Exposure’s mission is to teach youth how to use the power of photography and their own voices to become effective advocates for school reform and social change. Critical Exposure has developed a unique approach: give at-risk students cameras and training in documentary photography; encourage them to capture images that show the realities of their lives, and teach them how to use photographs and writing to tell their stories and to advocate for concrete policy change.

Programs

Critical Exposure teaches photography and social advocacy workshops to middle and high school students. To date, we have worked with more than 450 students in D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, Austin, Albuquerque and New Orleans. Critical Exposure is currently working with D.C. students to document and address the city’s dropout crisis. We’re also helping students in New Orleans to document school conditions after Hurricane Katrina.
