More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Sudan’s ongoing civil wars have chased two million people from Darfur south to Khartoum, the capital, where they struggle to survive in informal settlements with no access to public services. In Dar al-Salaam al-Rabwa, 40 kilometers from Khartoum, 35,000 residents suffer cholera, diarrhea and other diseases resulting from insufficient clean water. Only one of five water stations is operational, and the entire community relies on unsanitary water deliveries by donkey cart.
Activities
NEF’s project first will connect the community’s NEF-run health center and two NEF-supported schools directly to a clean water supply. We will then repair three water stations, connect an additional school and install hand pumps and filtration system.

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
Ultimately, the project will provide the entire community of 35,000 war refugees with access to healthy, clean water.
Project Message
One of the most pressing issues in [Dar al-Salaam al-Rabwa] is the extreme lack of clean water...[which] may be a cause for many of the waterborne diseases that are treated at the [NEF-run] clinic.

In addition, the project has expanded its work in the community, providing clean water to a local school reaching over 740 students.
Upcoming activities include extending water lines to schools in two additional neighborhoods. More than 1000 additional students will gain access to clean water through this expansion, which will in time reach the entire community of Dar al-Salaam al-Rabwa, serving over 25,000 displaced persons.
