Project Needs and Beneficiaries
The impact of this complex emergency in Darfur has created the most pronounced needs for women and girls. This is in part because women and girls have historically faced gaps in accessibility to education, leadership, healthcare and other rights prior to the conflict. Thus, this program seeks to combat the effects of the ongoing conflict on women and girls and counter pre-existing conditions that have restricted women’s development and status overall.
Activities
Through the construction and management of a network of Women’s Development Centers, RI seeks to provide a civil society resource that benefits women and girls during the conflict and into peacetime.

RI's North Darfur Women Centers are a Success!

The newly constructed women’s center was put to use almost immediately as RI’s women’s development team, in coordination with local partner, provided health training for local women which included promotion of safe motherhood skills and pre- and post-natal visits with health providers, sensitization on the value of routine immunization for pregnant women and children under 5, promotion of basic hygiene, and STI prevention. Nutrition education was also included, which promoted breastfeeding, best-use of food rations, and tips for recognizing child malnutrition and for preparing high-nutrient meals to prevent loss of breast milk.
