More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
After the genocide in Darfur, there is fragile peace between the North and South in Sudan and much unresolved conflict. Children in this country urgently need our help. BRAC’s schools address the challenges in Southern Sudan by targeting poor children, street children, nomads, child soldiers, and a majority of girls. BRAC offers an accelerated learning program for children who have never enrolled into primary school or who have dropped out by teaching 5 years of primary school in just 4 years.
Activities
1) 5 schools built within 1km of students’ houses 2) Female local teachers recruited & trained 3) 70% of students will be girls 4) Teaching methods include culture, music, dance and games 5) Meetings with parents held to ensure their support

Latest Update from the Field
The schools have been built!
By Michelle Chaplin - Program Manager, BRAC USA, May 25, 2009 11:48 AM
Born at the end of a civil war that spanned two decades, the children in the photos below did not even hope for a primary education a year ago - there were simply no schools around, not even a building that could be rented and converted into a school. BRAC's first office in Southern Sudan was a tent we shared with the UN!
Here's an overview of what we've accomplished with your help:
* 5 schools have been built
* teachers have been recruited and trained
* 175 students have been selected and have started classes
* initial meetings have been held in the community to generate support for the schools
While we've accomplished a lot of major goals, we still have work to do. The teachers need refresher trainings so they can prepare to take their students to the next grade. Students will need additional school supplies and workbooks for the next grade.
Thank you for your continuing support of the children in Southern Sudan!
Best,
Michelle Chaplin
