More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Seva Mandir (SM) runs non-formal education (NFE) centres to cater to children from poor tribal families in 583 villages of Rajasthan. Access to education is limited because (a) it is locally unavailable (b) of domestic and economic pressures or (c) it has traditionally not been accorded value. SM involves local communities in the management of NFEs and trains local instructors. NFEs equip children with essential skills for coping with the challenges of contemporary life.
Activities
NFEs run in rooms donated by villagers (or rented). Children are taught by village young men/women the basic numeric & literacy skills. Besides 3Rs, good habits, creative activities, visits to city/zoo/library are also undertaken.

Resources
Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
Enabling children to read and write independently with comprehension; Enabling marginalized tribal communities to experience alternative and meaningful education; empowering communities to demand quality education from the government.
Project Message
A reason why children in this region cannot attend school is that there is not enough 'push' in community/ family of the children & simultaneously no 'pull ' from Govt. schools.

By the fund raiser and bonus prize - Ms. Deepti Ameta, August 17, 2009 02:22 PM
Dear Friends,
Thank you so much for all your help during Alive and Learning Challenge. The challenge ended on 14th August and our project 'Send a child in India to school for a year' has won the first prize of raising most donations. We are very grateful for your generous contribution and help to Seva Mandir.
We raised a total of £ 5,605 with 28 donors. Since we raised the biggest amount of donations among all the other participants our project has won the bonus prize of £ 1000 too.
So the total raise is £ 6,605. This money will be helpful to ensure schooling for over 275 children for a year. Thank you so very much for your valuable support. It would have been not possible without your support.
In addition, our project has been selected for other promotional programs by Global Giving. It means, our project has a better chance to raise more support and awareness about children's education. The following link would be of some interest to you - http://www.globalgiving.com/dy/fundraiser/prevfund/gg.html?regid=2218
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks from all of us here at Seva Mandir. It has been your generous support and deep faith that we are able to work with these children and for their education. I will be posting more stories and updates on this program. Many thanks once again. We would be very happy to hear any feedback from you.
With kindest regards,
Deepti
