Schools for Mineworkers' Children in India
Education in India
SummaryMany mining communities in Rajasthan are without schools. Illiteracy is rampant and breaking out of poverty is close to impossible. Building schools and educating children is the only solution.

More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Mineworkers live in very difficult and poor conditions. Some of the mines are in very remote areas and the communities there lack many basic facilities, such as access to education. Gravis would like to build schools in three remote villages to increase the number of children gaining access to education. Children of mineworkers, who due to family circumstances are often forced in to early labor and denied the benefits of education, will be the first to be granted admittance to the new schools.
Activities
The three new schools will be built that will benefit over 500 children (including 200 girls) by giving them access to education. There is often great enthusiasm among parents to send their children regularly to school.

Resources
Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
Increase in enrollment and retention of children in the education centers, reduction in the number of children working as laborers and increase in education levels in language, arithmetic and general knowledge.
Project Message
In 2003 I visited a school built by Gravis. Rather than being forced into early labor, the students were thriving. The new schools will change the futures of thousands of children – for the better.
