Ghana: Storage for women's surplus palm oil

Ghana: Storage for women's surplus palm oil

Summary

Storage space for a Ghanaian women's palm oil processing group would prevent their surplus from going rancid, enabling them to obtain premium prices rather than being forced to sell it off quickly.

More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

In western Ghana where palm fruit is abundant, the business of processing palm oil is passed down from family to family. For the women of these villages, many of whom are illiterate single mothers, inheriting this business provides them with their sole source of income. Over 40 women have combined equipment and labor to form the Dzinpa Adom palm oil processing group. While the group is profitable, the income generated is minimal as the oil goes rancid due to the lack of a storage space

Activities

Women will become competitive in the market and will earn a sufficient living.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Build a warehouse to store surplus oil for lean times, sell to the highest bidder, and house an office for bookkeeping and administrative activities.

Project Message

In Africa even rancid oil can be used, but it cannot be sold for much profit. These women need storage space so they can be competitive in the market and earn a sufficient living.
