More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

IMC makes clean water and sanitation facilities available to nearly 50,000 people in Samburu District, an area plagued by water shortages. Recent droughts have intensified already-existing water shortages, a crisis that now impacts 3.5 million Kenyans living in arid and semi-arid areas of the country. Worldwide, approximately 20 percent of the global population does not have access to clean drinking water and more than 2.6 billion lack sanitation services.

Activities

IMC is implementing a comprehensive program designed to increase access to safe water and sanitation facilities, as well as promote hygiene awareness, for people residing in the Baragoi and Nyiro divisions of Samburu district.

Resources

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

IMC is constructing dams, building latrines for towns and primary schools, training village health and sanitation and water committees how to improve public health through safe drinking water and hygiene.

Project Message

If a community lacks clean water & sanitation, they lack the foundation for public health. Pairing safe drinking water with good sanitation allows communities, in the most arid regions to thrive.
- Leela Mulukutla, Country Director, Kenya

Latest Update from the Field

Increasing water availability

By Crystal Wells - Communications Officer, June 24, 2009 06:15 PM

The drought in the already-arid northeast Kenya led to clashes earlier this year over water. Conflict over this vital resource is something that International Medical Corps is working to prevent by increasing its availability in Samburu district.
