More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
With the devastating economic and social impact of HIV/AIDS in Africa, traditional community support systems to protect children have eroded. Orphans are often left with challenges and responsibilities far beyond their age. Moved by their plight, local Mothers Groups help support these children. Camfed’s grants to Mothers Groups fund training and supplies to boost their income to pay children's school costs. This project funds groups in the Nkayi, Chikomba and Mt Darwin districts of Zimbabwe.
Activities
With grants, Mothers Groups can earn income by making soap, clothing, shoes, pottery and linens, or by growing vegetables and beekeeping. This income pays for school fees and supplies for orphans and other vulnerable children who cannot afford them.

Latest Update from the Field
Zimbabwe: Compassion in a Time of Crisis
By Tanya johnston - Development Assistant, December 17, 2008 05:55 PM
Speaking with one of our Zimbabwean colleagues, I asked her what keeps people going. She said, “What I love about my people is that they are so creative. They don’t stop at the hurdles. They go under or around them. We know this time will pass. Nothing is forever.”
As you read about the acts of compassion that are occurring each day around Zimbabwe, as you read the firsthand accounts from Camfed staff members on the ground, I hope you will agree with me that Zimbabweans need all the support we can provide them. For children in Zimbabwe, school is a lifeline. Without our help, that lifeline is in jeopardy of disappearing.
