More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
In Malawi, schooling past the primary level is not free, and secondary school is an expense most families cannot afford. Most families subsist on about $1.00 USD/day and cannot pay the hefty tuition, transport costs, and other expenses. Girls in Malawi are at a particular disadvantage since families who can afford to send a child to school will often invest in a son rather than a daughter. Our scholars often represent the first females in their villages to graduate from secondary school.
Activities
AGE pays for 20 Malawian girls to attend secondary school. AGE also provides vital mentoring in academics, life skills, and career development to help scholars succeed in and out of the classroom and become role models for other females.

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
An educated female improves the lives of her family and community because she is empowered to make healthy, informed decisions. She advocates for herself and reduces the instance of HIV/AIDS. She qualifies for better jobs, improving the economy.
Project Message
I want to become a medical doctor because I like caring about sick people and also to increase the number of doctors in Malawi since there are few doctors here.

Latest Update from the Field
Designing a Mentoring Curriculum
By Sarah Lance - Operations Manager, August 06, 2009 11:44 AM
As a result of their hard work, AGE is now ready to design a stronger and more robust mentoring curriculum for our scholars over the coming year. Once piloted with our existing scholars, we hope to expand to a larger constituency throughout Malawi.
All photos are by AGE Volunteer Marco Baringer during his trip to Malawi in 2009.
