Boys behind bars

Boys behind bars
Three boys imprisoned in Pollsmoor Prison that were involved in our program. Andile, Lwazi and Basil were all involved in running the program with other inmates and were involved with Hope Academy for over a year.

Freedom

Freedom
Andile, Lwazi and Basil were released and are now back in their communities. We are still in contact with all three of them and they have been involved in our community programs since release. Andile is now working, Basil is looking for employment and Lwazi is on our training program and coaches in our community academy.

Hope Academy in full view!
We asked one of the inmates to paint our Hope Academy logo on a board for the cell where the team stays. The prison management then decided to place it in the front of the prison for all to view when they enter.

Training for Life

Training for Life
Hope Academy uses soccer to teach the juvenile offenders strong life skills that prepare them for release back into their communities. Values such as teamwork, leadership, peer pressure, discipline & self-worth are taught. An example of this is:- in soccer to be successful you need to build a good team of players, in life to be successful you need to have the right people around you to help you reach your goals.

Change

Change
When Precious was sent to prison he wanted to become a 28 prison gang member. Through the Hope Academy program he saw an opportunity for change. Precious is now being trained as a coach and acts as chaplin of the Drakenstein Hope Academy. He is now being used as an inspiration to other prisoners.

2009 Hope Academy Drakenstein

2009 Hope Academy Drakenstein
The 2009 Hope Academy program has started with a bang. The teamwork of the academy has been a testimony to the whole prison. The prison has seen the impact of this program and has now developed the whole prison unit into a sport's academy with other sports codes being taught. The other academies are based on the Hope Academy model.

Hopelessness

Hopelessness
Once boys are placed into prison they join the gangs to survive. The gangs offer protection and a sense of belonging. Sadly though the gangs start to infiltrate the mind sets and boys end up "belonging in the prison". Hope Academy teaches truth and offers boys a loop hole out of the gangs and to have a chance of a brighter future.

Development Plans

Development Plans
Each boy is placed into a development plan. The development plan is a strategic plan to develop each player in their football, faith and future. The coach is responsible for seeing that this plan is implemented in the prison and once released.

Hope Academy impacting communities

Hope Academy impacting communities
Sinethemba was released from the Hope Academy program in 2007. Since his release he has developed a soccer program in Khayelitsha township based on the Hope Academy model. We have been excited to see the impact Sinethemba is making on his community.

Soccer Training

Soccer Training
Soccer is used as a tool to impact these young men. Once in the academy we see that change is possible and that these young men need love, support, and care to become the people they were meant to be.
