More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Communities like Canoa Quebrada, rather than benefiting from the growth of development in the area, are often suffering as local labor is exploited and youths are encouraged into prostitution and drugs. In this region of Brazil, famous for its musical heritage, one ex-resident has returned to her roots and joined forces with locals to help set up a music program for 30 disadvantaged youths. Music, education and recreation are combined to bring joy into their lives and hope for a better future

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
Whilst bringing an ongoing sense of fulfillment into children’s lives, the program also seeks to improve education levels and opportunities for income generation and advancement, whilst restoring local cultural traditions to this hard-hit community
Project Message
Most Brazilians do not have the money to access their culture, let alone pay the bills. In this kind of environment the children lose out. How are the new Gilberto Gils and Tom Jobims going to emerge?

Music for Canoa
By Andrew McKleroy - President, July 19, 2009 12:59 PM
"I really like to play music and even though I can only attend some of the rehearsal because of my job, I manage to come and work hard so that I don't interfere with the other's progress. When we play together as a group it is a lot of fun! That's why I do what I can to come here. I really like our orchestra! (Patrícia, 17)".
We want to thank you our sponsors for supporting our program. This program has made music and culture available for our children and young adults and has allowed them to discover a new path on their lives away from drugs and prostitution.
In order to keep our project alive, we need your support. Your donation helps to pay the salaries of teachers, maintain our instruments and purchase supplies and new instruments. We are in need of drums or percussion instruments to expand our percussion lessons as well as guitars and wind instruments.
We now have a paid Maestro who has worked hard to improve our orchestra. We need to maintain his salary of $ 200 dollars a month so that we can continue our classes. We appreciate all your support and contribution to keep our band alive!
We would like to ask you for any suggestions, critics or feedback about our program. You have made it possible for us to continue our work and for that we want to thank you!
