More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
The escalation of violence in Gaza has caused high numbers of civilian casualties and life in Gaza has been put at tremendous risk. Women and children in Gaza were already vulnerable, and now the area's medical and sanitation infrastructure has been destroyed. Hospitals are without power. Doctors are running out of emergency medical supplies to treat the wounded. The death toll in Gaza has surpassed 500 and the number of injured is now more than 2,000.
Activities
MADRE is raising funds to send to our partner organization so that they can buy desperately needed emergency medical equipment, including every type of blood, sterilization kits, needles, anesthetics, and catheters.

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
Emergency medical care provided by the Palestinian Medical Relief Society can save the lives of dozens of individuals in Gaza. Providing care now will better equip Palestinians to weather the crisis and rebuild their communities in the future.
Project Message
We are afraid to leave our homes. We cannot work, the children cannot go to school. Every day there are more deaths, more injuries, and fewer places for people to be treated safely.

MADRE Provides Emergency Relief in Gaza
By Vivian Stromberg - Executive Director, MADRE, May 04, 2009 12:46 PM
With your help, MADRE and our partner, the Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS), responded to the immediate crisis by providing primary and emergency medical services throughout Gaza. With eight clinics in the Gaza Strip, PMRS was able to supply emergency aid to much of the area. The organization quickly established a 12-month action plan to address the humanitarian crisis.
Since the ceasefire, PMRS has intensified its work, including the extension of mobile clinic activities and the distribution of water, first aid kits, blankets and mattresses. PMRS was also able to mobilize hundreds of volunteers to join a team of 70 medical professionals in working all over Gaza, as well as provide psychosocial services, increase coordination with other organizations, and ensure that primary health care clinics remained open, serving hundreds of people each day. Furthermore, PMRS has implemented first aid training courses for volunteers, with about 90 people completing the training to date. PMRS still has an urgent need for essential medicines, more psychosocial services, mobile medical treatment, and physiotherapy. PMRS is placing a particular emphasis on dealing with the psychological effects of this crisis on the Gazan population. Prior to the most recent Israeli incursion, there was already a high rate of post-traumatic stress disorder among Gazan children, and it can only be expected that such psychological disorders will greatly increase.
