More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

War and civil strife have worsened the already bleak Afghan educational system, which is plagued by poor funding, disorganization, and a lack of teachers, schools, and materials. Among the minority of children who attend school, attendance is poor and dropout rates are high, especially for girls. This preschool program (PEP) provides early education that serves as a foundation for life-long learning, emphasizes student-centered teaching, and is a model of quality education for Afghan schools.

Activities

Project partner AIL serves 400 kids, ages 6 and younger, with preschool classes in Kabul and Herat, Afghanistan. They learn reading, English, math, computer, gym, and health. Teachers use interactive teaching to promote critical thinking.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Preschool graduates excel in primary school and beyond. Teachers, principals, and parents excitedly report the positive changes they see in preschool children. This model program is setting the standard for early childhood education in Afghanistan.

Project Message

The students who finish AIL preschool and come to our school are so intelligent that all the teachers are amazed. When we hear that a student has come to our school from AIL/PEP, we are very happy.
- Mussadak, school principal in Kabul, Afghanistan

A Special Giving Opportunity.....

By Sondra Johnson - Afghan Children Thank You, November 10, 2009 03:47 PM

Thank you for your support. Your desire to make a difference in this world has made a difference, and we are so thankful that Afghan people have had their lives changed with your help.

We wanted to share with you a very special opportunity to give more than 100% from November 10 through December 1st. Please share this with those you know who care. During this time, we are privileged to receive additional matching funds from your donation through Global Giving of at least 30%. The need is still great. Afghanistan struggles to become a country of strength and stability.

In the month of September, the Afghan Institute of Learning taught 594 children in their pre-school program. 45% of these were girls. The AIL techniques used in enriching and educating these children have been successful and replicated by other teaching organizations. With the high standards that AIL demands, parents of young children are signing up their children early for the pre-school program.
