More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Before we opened the Santi Primary School in May 2008, there was no school in a Tamang village in Ramche, a rural area in the mountains of Nepal's Sindhupalchok district. About half the people in the village are Tamang, one of the smallest indigenous ethnic minorities in Nepal whose members are often victims of discrimination. The school is open to all children. To promote education for girls and minorities, all of our teachers are women; two are Tamang and one is a Dalit, or untouchable.

Activities

Tuition is free at our school. We pay all expenses. Eventually, the community will assume financial responsibility. We must establish projects to generate cash, such as a women's cooperative, improved agriculture practices, and animal husbandry.

Funding Information

Total Funding Received to Date: $4,993
Remaining Goal to be Funded: $15,007
Total Funding Goal: $20,000

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Empowering the community to pay the costs of running and expanding the Santi Primary School allows the school to flourish without depending on foreign support. Also, women’s cooperatives and improved farm practices will help improve everyday life.

Project Message

One of our teachers, Subhadra, is the first and only Dalit (untouchable) woman in the village to stay in school past 10th grade. Hopefully, many girls, especially minorities, will follow her example.

Our project coordinator, Lila Jung Gurung, has conducted an evaluation of our first academic year:

• All 25 of our first-grade students passed the government’s final exam in March
• Student attendance reached 91% between January and March
• Teachers have requested we add a 4th teacher since we added a Grade 2 class
• Parents are satisfied with their children’s reading, writing and speaking skills

GOVERNMENT OFFERS FINANCIAL SUPPORT

The government in Nepal has awarded our school with an annual stipend, based on our enrollment, of about $1,200 -- about the cost of one teacher salary for a year. This support signals the government’s intention to fully fund all of our teachers’ salaries next year.

Thanks to all of you for helping to make it possible!
